For everyone doing in #NaNoWriMo, even if you feel like you’re “failing” & not doing it right. Some #writingtips to help you get back to working on your book.
• #NaNoWriMo is not about being an author (published writer). It’s about being a writer: all you need to do is write. pic.twitter.com/jE6bx7uRuh— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Stuck on a scene? Take a deep breath. Take a walk: around your house, around your yard, on a treadmill, down the road. Take a few more deep breaths. You want to be a writer, and writers write. We all get stuck, all the time. Now, go back to your writing.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018

Still stuck on the same scene despite taking lots of deep breaths and taking a walk? Work on another scene. Work on any other part of the book, in fact. There’s no rule that you have to write the book in its final order. Just write something, anything.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018

Really stuck & can’t get anything done on the book? Write a letter to your book: tell it everything that’s stressing you and making you feel upset. Write letters to any characters who are causing you problems. Breathe. Take a break. Go back to your book.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Don’t count words every day. If you’re writing anything at all, you’re writing, even if you’re not technically winning according to the NaNo rules. Not all of us can write fast, or write 6 typed pages a day every single day. Don’t count words till the end.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Do NOT re-read what you write. #NaNoWriMo is for getting a DRAFT of your novel done, not an edited, revised, finished, publishable book. If you re-read, you will be writing the same things forever. Write, don’t edit or revise. Do NOT re-read what you write— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Do NOT beat yourself up. No matter how much you write, no matter how often, you are writing. Every writer makes his own schedule. Every writer gets stuck, no matter how many books s/he’s written/published. We all get stressed. Writing is WORK, not a game.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
It’s okay to change your mind. Don’t want to continue #NaNoWriMo? That’s cool. It’s your decision. Don’t want to be a writer? Few people really understand just how much work it is: if it doesn’t suit you, that’s cool. Find another passion that is for you.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Ready to go back to your book? That’s great, even if you’re behind in NaNo’s word count. You can always catch up. You can always decide you want a different writing schedule. It’s your life, your book. Decide what kind of writing works for you. Go write.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
#NaNoWriMo #WritingTips
Do NOT compare yourself to any other writer, and, whatever you do, do NOT ever compare yourself to celebrity authors. You only see them on social media or on Oprah’s couch, not at home in working on books. You are unique, your book is unique. Go write.— Dr. Alexandria Szeman #MeToo #BelieveSurvivors (@Alexandria_SZ) November 16, 2018
